Sense Hygrometer Not Accurate? Calibration and Placement Tips

If your Duux Sense hygrometer gives inconsistent humidity readings, placement and calibration are the usual culprits. Learn quick fixes and when to accept the device's limits.

Quick answer

Most Sense hygrometer inaccuracies come from poor placement near heat or moisture sources, not a broken sensor. Move the device to a stable indoor spot and re-test; if readings still drift wildly, the unit may need replacement.

Why placement matters more than calibration

The Sense uses a passive sensor that responds to the air right around it. Placing it near a window, radiator, kitchen steam, or bathroom humidity can produce readings that reflect a microclimate, not your whole room.

For a true room average, keep the Sense at least 1–2 meters away from obvious sources of heat or moisture, and off the floor. A central shelf or table at mid-room height gives the most representative reading.

When a reading error is actually normal

Hygrometers naturally respond slowly to rapid humidity changes, so a sudden spike after cooking or showering may take several minutes to settle. Also, small fluctuations of ±3–5% RH are typical and not a defect.

If the Sense consistently shows values that contradict your comfort or other devices, then calibration may be worth trying. But if it only misbehaves in one corner of the room, placement is the likelier fix.

Diagnose and fix your Sense hygrometer

  • Symptom: Readings seem too high, too low, or jump around without a clear pattern.
  • Likely cause: Placement near heat, moisture, or direct airflow; a slow sensor response; or a defective unit if the error persists after repositioning.
  • Corrective action: Move the Sense to a central indoor spot away from windows, vents, and appliances. Wait 30–60 minutes for the sensor to stabilize. If readings remain erratic, test in another room to isolate the issue. If the device still reads inconsistently after relocation, the sensor may be faulty—consider replacing the unit rather than recalibrating.
  • When to stop or choose another option: If the Sense matches a reference hygrometer within ±5% RH after repositioning, accept the reading as accurate. If it does not, and you need precise control for plants or storage, look for a higher-end hygrometer with a calibration feature. For most home comfort needs, the Sense is accurate enough once placed correctly; only upgrade if you require laboratory-grade precision.

Product note
